Description

MEHRIVAN is the name of two quote unrelated important carpet origins in Persia. It is a district north of Hamedan, famous for fine runners and carpets as illustrated in fig. H.3….. there is also a villa of the same name in the Heriz area of Azerbaijan. As applied to older goods, the latter MEHRIVAN represents the second grade of Heriz carpets ( Heriz itself being the first, and Georgian the third), BUT today the name is more specifically applied to tow district categories of newer goods: sound, medium-coarse carpet with a typical squarish medallion and distinguished by a brighter shade of red and a crisper appearance than is found in other Heriz goods; and secondly, the all-over pattern illustrated in fig. H.3 . The red here is also typical, but cream grounds are also found. All-over designs are not comm in the Heriz area today, and this one certainly reflects the manufacturing tradition of the region from the early part of this century. The design has perhaps some affinity with the Herat- design derivatives of such places as Nenej, but the elaboration of the motif is entirely in the Heriz- area style and is always recognizable as such in the many variant forms which are found. Most rug sizes are found in small quantities, as in other Heriz villages, but the vast majority of the production is medium carpet sizes.
